Where did you go to school?

I received my undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. I then went on to get my optometry degree at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN.

What do you do during an eye exam?

During my exams, I start with a review of a patient’s full health record including family history and all current medications. This gives me initial information regarding anything particular to be concerned about. The next part of the exam consists of a full check of the patient’s visual system, and if there is any need for vision correction. The final part of the exam is a thorough health check of the structures of the eye to determine if there are any signs pointing to any eye health issues.

How often should you get your eyes checked?

I would recommend all children get an eye exam before starting full time school around the age of 4 or 5. This will allow us to address any concerns before they become potential problems. If it is not determined that a child needs vision correction, I would recommend an exam every 1 to 2 years. For adults that need vision correction and only wear glasses, I would recommend a checkup every 1 to 2 years, but if someone wears contact lenses, I would recommend an annual exam in order to also make sure the contact lenses are fitting properly and not causing any damage to the eyes. For any patient with an eye related disease, the exam schedule can be anywhere from a few months to a year in between exams depending on the case.

What are your hobbies?

I love going to live shows around Austin, and I try to get to 1 or 2 big music festivals around the country each year. I collect records, and I am always adding to this collection from Austin’s great record stores. I have really gotten into photography, and I especially enjoy taking photos at live music shows. I love spending time outside cycling, hiking and camping.

What do you love about Austin?

It may sound cliched, but a huge reason of why I moved to Austin was the live music scene. I love that you are able to see so many varied acts in great venues throughout the city any day of the week. This is in addition to the major festivals and SXSW. I also love the fact that people in Austin are very down to earth and easy going, and it is very easy to feel comfortable in any surrounding. The weather is also great (except maybe July and August!) to be able to enjoy all of the outdoor activities the city has to offer.
