What do you like the most about being an Optician?
What I like most about being an Optician is that it allows me to interact with the public, have fun, and help to get people into a pair of glasses that makes them feel good. Aside from the LOOK of the glasses, it's very rewarding to put patients in a lens that corrects their vision and works best for their unique/individual lifestyle.
What brought you to the industry and how many years have you been an Optician?
Prior to becoming an Optician, I spent about seven years as a medical billing and coding specialist. I was working for an Optometrist at the time who sensed that I wasn't totally content with what I was doing, and asked if I would consider apprenticing as an Optician. One year later I was certified by the American Board of Opticianry and worked at that practice until moving to Austin. I've been in the industry for about six years.
What are your favorite spots in Austin?
I live in South Austin and love everything about it! My favorite places for live, local music are Sagebrush and the Far Out. If I want to watch a sporting event, I'll head to Lustre Pearl South or the Git Out.
What do you like to do outside of Optique?
When I'm not working, I'm spending time with my wife and cat. I like to kayak, hike, go to local breweries, and hunt for hidden treasures at the local thrift stores (sometimes I'll even find vintage glasses)!
